One thing that has come up quite a bit is concern over what other stylists are doing.
You’ve probably felt it to a degree. Maybe you got a message from clients sayings they’ve found someone to do their roots at home, but they’ll be back as soon as you open, which infuriated you. You were so livid at that stylist who is illegally doing at-home services that it sent you on a spiral.
What did that spiral do for you? Did it help to grow your business? Did it help you feel better?
Likely not. It gave you concern, anger, and worry. It didn’t get you any closer to your goal of going back to the salon or bring you any more money. All it brought you was pain.
That is a lack mindset.
And in today’s new normal, it’s easy to slip into a lack mindset (worrying about what others are doing and if they’re stealing your clients). But it’s also so important that you work to move back to an abundance mindset. Today, we’re walking you through how to make that change.
The danger of a lack mindset
A lack mindset is when you’re focused on what you perceive you don’t have instead of all the amazing things you do.
For example, when you are so worried that somebody will take something that is rightfully yours (like your clientele) and you or your family will suffer.
First, that’s just not true. Second, going around with that mindset will cause more problems for you and your business than anyone doing kitchen cosmetology. You’ll focus on the negative and on what other people are doing in their businesses instead of working to build up your own.
What is an abundance mindset?
On the other hand, an abundance mindset is when you focus on being grateful for what you have. You are confident in the strength and stability of your business. You have empathy for stylists who feel desperate and think working illegally is the only option for their family to survive right now.
An abundance mindset lets you bless and release worry about what other people are doing and focus on the joy and fullness of your own life.
How to choose a place of abundance
Let’s think for a second about that stylist who decided to do hair at home. They put their license and their family’s and personal health on the line. That’s big, right?
It might not be something you’d do, but can you be empathetic to the stylist who does? Of course, because when you think about who would do kitchen cosmetology right now, it’s somebody who’s desperate and feels like there is no other way.
You can choose to come from a place of abundance by acknowledging to each their own and let those stylists do what they feel is necessary because there is plenty for all of us.
Even if most of us can’t do all the clients we did before – we’ll have to either scale back our hours or not double book – this is an industry where always there’s plenty to go around.
Focusing on that will help you come to a place of abundance where you don’t spin your wheels about who is doing hair illegally or getting mad at clients.
How to shift your mindset
Let’s say you get a call from your local government that somebody reported you to the state board for operating illegally…but you weren’t.
You were alone in your space, disinfecting and cleaning to prepare for when you go back. And you think there’s no way whoever called the board thought you were doing services, so you believe they reported you because they were jealous.
That’s a lack mindset coming into play.
To shift back to an abundant mindset, take a moment and choose to feel empathy and sorrow for those who pass judgment.
Focus back on everything you have: your amazing staff or coworkers, your beautiful clientele, your and your family’s health. All the things that make you feel grateful.
And know that if you serve your clients to the best of your ability and keep an abundance mindset, nobody can take you or your business down.
Come from a place of abundance and focus on creating a strong plan for returning to the salon, working on your marketing funnel, networking with other stylists, and beefing up on education. Don’t worry about the rest.
If you want to have a long, beautiful career coming out of this where you make more money than ever before, an abundance mindset is the way to do it. Focus on your own paper, stay in the zone, and keep an eye on the prize.
