You’re reading part of a series focused on what it actually takes to grow a clientele in the current economy—without burning out or relying on luck.

For stylists who want deeper support, the 10 New Clients Every Month Bootcamp starts February 9. During this week-long experience, you’ll learn the 8-step plan today’s busiest stylists are using, upgrade your marketing systems, refine your new-guest onboarding, and understand what makes clients choose one stylist over another.

Alongside five trainings from Britt, you’ll get daily coaching, networking sessions, and a 2-hour Marketing Masterclass designed to help you attract 10+ new clients every month.

Between 2021 and mid-2024, the beauty industry experienced one of the easiest growth periods in its history. With salon closures coast-to-coast and stylists exiting the industry at scale, the industry shrank by nearly 30% which left hundreds of thousands of clients scrambling for new stylists….chairs filled themselves. Building clientele felt effortless—and for many new stylists, they assumed this was the new-norm.

But 2026 is different. The bubble has burst. Competition is fierce. And Stylists everywhere are asking:

  • Why is it harder to grow?
  • Is the economy to blame?
  • What do clients actually want now?
  • How do I stand out and get chosen?

Here’s a full breakdown of the reality of TODAY’s market, what’s actually changed, and the exact steps stylists must take to rapidly build clientele again—based on the psychology and behaviors of modern consumers.

1. Stop Blaming the Economy: The Real Challenge is Competition + Behavior Shift

While much of the industry points fingers at “the economy,” the data says otherwise:

  • U.S. consumer spending increased in 2025 (Morgan Stanley).
  • Consumers aren’t spending less—they’re spending smarter.
  • The trend is value over volume, not discount hunting.
  • People are opting for experiences over goods—think dining experiences, concerts, travel—not more “stuff”

Clients aren’t avoiding salons. They’re avoiding risk.

They refuse to waste money on a stylist who might deliver. They want a sure bet.

MEANWHILE…

  • The number of working stylists in the U.S. has bounced back as year after year, more adults choose to enroll in trade school programs.
  • Trade school enrollment has nearly doubled since 2017.
  • This means the industry is actually struggling because there are more stylists but the same amount of clients seeking services.

This is a supply and demand issue.

2. Understanding Modern Consumer Behavior: The Four Questions Every Client Asks

Whenever a potential client evaluates a stylist, they unconsciously ask four questions—just like YOU do when choosing a restaurant, an outfit, or a service provider.

CLIENTS ASK:

  • Does this LOOK good to me?
    • (Your visuals, branding, website, Instagram, photos)
  • Do other people like this business?
    • (Online reviews, community reputation, word-of-mouth)
  • Does the price match the perceived value?
    • (Not the cheapest—but worth it)
  • What are the chances I’ll walk out happy?
    • (Quality of your work, clarity of your brand, transformations, results)

3. Perceived Value: The New Currency of the Beauty Industry

🎧 Full Podcast Episode on Perceived Value

In this episode, we dive deeper into perceived value, like: why the number of salons operating in your town does not matter, how most salons determine pricing, why it’s wrong, and the way you should be doing it, and so much more.

Consumers no longer want “cheap” or “deals”— they want confidence.

Perceived value is not what YOU think you’re worth.
It’s what the client believes you are worth based on:

  • The visuals you use to represent your business (think branding elements like brand colors, logo, photos used on your website, verbiage used, etc)
  • Consistency of your social media posting
  • Content and messaging in your social media posting
  • Frequency of online reviews
  • The experience they get when they visit your website
  • Your reputation online and within the community
  • Easy of your booking system and process
  • Social media content, messaging and consistency
  • Pricing alignment
  • Salon environment

Hair Stylists' Marketing Funnel

AWARENESS

Clients discover you—your referral program, local search, paid advertising, local network marketing, partnerships, etc.

INTEREST

Clients are curious about you and want to learn more — Check you out on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Google Reviews, Yelp, etc

DESIRE

This stage belongs to your website—Your website is the #1 salesperson.  Some of you have a great person, some of you have an old out-dated sales person and some of you are just using an online booking page right now and have no salesperson at all.

If your website does not sell the experience, you lose bookings.

TRUST

This is the gap between booking the first appointment and actually showing up-After booking, clients often second-guess their decision.  If you do not intentionally build trust (beyond auto-confirmation texts), cancellations and no-shows rise.

OPPORTUNITY

Your brand – This is the heartbeat of your business.  This speaks to your target market clients, attracting all the right clients to your chair while making it clear to those who aren’t a good fit that you likely aren’t the stylist for them.  Clients don’t want to see any stylist; they want to see the stylist who is the absolute best fit for them.  A logo alone won’t make that happen; a well-built brand is an energy, vibe, message, and knowing.

The right brand builds know, like, and trust before a client walks through the door.

Hairstylists' Retention Funnel

ASSESSMENT

The first 3 visits for any client- This is where clients evaluate whether you’re their long-term stylist.

Statistically, stylists only retain 30% of new clients—a huge growth leak. The more clients we can get to choose you long-term, the faster your business will grow.

NURTURE

Where your “regulars” live- These clients have made it past the first 3 visits, like you, like the result they are getting working with you….but could be swayed to move on to another stylist if the conditions were right.  These clients are price sensitive, schedule sensitive, and aren’t always consistent.

LOYALTY

Longevity doesn’t equal Loyalty.

Just because a client has seen you for 3, 5, 10+ years doesn’t make them truly loyal.

If there is a client who will push back at a price increase, who you continue to discount, who would be upset if you changed your schedule or who often complains….they aren’t truly loyal, they are stuck in the “Nurture” level.

Loyal clients:

  • Refer their friends
  • Adapt to your schedule
  • Don’t flinch at price increases
  • Grow with you and your business

SCALE

This is where the magic happens.
Once your Hair Stylist Success Hourglass is fully built, you can:

  • Expect 8-15+ new guest requests monthly
  • Reduce hours and shift your schedule to be more desirable
  • Earn more while working less without double-booking or hiring assistants

  • They’re comparing stylists side-by-side

— you can control your outcomes again.

Our Thriver Society members who adopted these strategies in 2025 are already reporting:

The opportunity is still enormous.
But only if you work with today’s reality, not yesterday’s bubble.
