What do you think of when you hear “personal brand on social media”? Chances are, something like a personal blog, right?

That might be good when it comes to connecting with your existing clientele, but sharing a lot of your personal life can actually be too much information for somebody who’s not yet working with you.

Why? There’s a really fine line between relatability and overexposure.

Instead, find the happy medium between “I don’t want to show anything at all,” and “I want to show every little bit about my life.” That sweet spot is key to building a personal brand on social media as a beauty professional and we’re going to break it down today!

Know you are not your brand

Having a personal brand does not mean you have to post pictures of your kids, your vacation, or your dinner. It means having a face, a person, to the brand.

A personal brand is about your business and your business persona, not your personal life. You can share elements of your life, but only if they relate to your business persona.

Create posts for your target market

You might love reading posts about hair color and formulation, but chances are, your clients don’t.

Instead of posting things you want to see, think about your target market’s top hair problems and use your posts to showcase your brand and share why you are the best person to fix them.

Post more than just hair pictures

Clients want to see your work…but they also want to see what it’s like to work with you.

Enter vibe via lifestyle photos, testimonials, and lives on social media platforms.

These photos and posts are so important to building your brand on social media because they give clients a behind-the-scenes, real-life sneak peek at what it’s like to work with you and makes it easy for them to picture themselves in your chair.

Be consistent

We get it, you’re busy. But you have to show up on social media consistently so a) your posts show up in your followers’ feed and b) so potential clients know you’re reliable.

If your schedule is tight, start small. Maybe post only two to three times a week. Choose a pattern that works for your schedule, then stick with it.

Also, keep your photo composition and graphic colors consistent with your personal brand. Followers should be able to tell it’s your post without looking at the handle.

Respond and engage

Social media is just that: social. If you want to build up your brand on social media, you have to dedicate time to interact. Make sure to always respond to people who comment on your posts, comment on your followers’ posts, and respond to your DMs promptly.

That doesn’t mean you have to jump to your phone every time you get a new DM, but you can check in once a day to respond to messages, interact, and be social. Trust us…it works wonders for your brand!

Personal brands all come down to this: people today want to interact with other people, not a business, so it’s more important than ever to build a personal brand on social media.
